In Ephesians 4:1-16, the Word of God describes the local, new testament church as the visible representation of the body of Christ. It is in this passage that the church is given a three-fold purpose for existence.
To Know God (Ephesian 4:11-15)
Our first objective is to learn about God and His Son, Jesus Christ. As we mature in the faith, we are able to discern between truth and the false teachings of the day. As we know God, our relationship with Him grows stronger.
To Grow Together (Ephesians 4:16)
A healthy body will grow as it gets the right nutrients and works together. Each part of the body has its own function and purpose.
To Sow Love (Ephesians 4:2, 15-16)
Love is mentioned three times in this passage. First, we are to love one another as we work together. Next, we are to spread the truth of God’s Word out of a loving heart to those around us. Third, a loving atmosphere will allow for growth.
